Sidford F. Hamp was born in Liverpool, England, March 10, 1855. At the age of seventeen he went to the United States and obtained a place with the Hayden Geological Survey through the influence of his uncle, William Blackmore. Hamp traveled with the 1872 expedition for six months, visiting the area which would become Yellowstone National Park, before returning to England.
